Teleradiokolbe Abate benedettino a Roma, fu invitato da San Gregorio Magno ad evangelizzare l'Inghilterra, ricaduta nell'idolatria sotto i Sassoni. Qui fu ricevuto da Etelberto, re di Kent che aveva sposato la cattolica Berta, di origine franca. Etelberto si convertì, aiutò Agostino e gli permise di predicare in piena libertà. Nel Natale successivo al suo arrivo in Inghilterra, più di diecimila Sassoni ricevettero il battesimo. Il Papa inviò altri missionari e nominò arcivescovo e primate d'Inghilterra Agostino, che cercò di riunire la Chiesa bretone a quella sassone senza riuscirci perché troppo forte era il rancore dei bretoni contro gli invasori sassoni. Suo merito però è stato quello di aver convertito quasi tutto il regno di Kent.

During the Mass, a priest accidentally overturned the Sacred Species of the consecrated Wine onto the corporal. The Sacred Blood formed an Image of the Crucified Christ on the corporal. The relic of the corporal with the Blood is preserved today, placed on the side altar in the minor basilica of Saint George in Walldürn. Decise allora di diventare sacerdote, per spendere interamente la vita a servizio dei poveri. Ordinato il 21 febbraio 1807, venne nominato nel 1812 segretario del nuovo vescovo di Brescia, monsignor Gabrio Maria Nava. Per i giovani sbandati e disorientati aveva fondato uno dei primi oratori della città, poi l’Istituto San Barnaba, cui aggiunse, nel 1824, la prima scuola tipografica d’Italia. Egli si rivelò subito un ragazzo vivace e geniale, dotato di grande intelligenza, aperto a molti interessi, sensibile ai problemi sociali. Ordinato sacerdote nel 1807, si dedicò subito ad un’intensa attività catechistica, fondando presto un suo “oratorio” sapientemente organizzato per l’educazione cristiana dei ragazzi e degli adolescenti più poveri, precorrendo così i moderni centri educativi diurni e l’associazionismo giovanile.
